PLATO

PLATO is ESA’s future "planet hunter" scheduled for launch in late 2026. Using 26 cameras, it will search for habitable worlds around stars similar to our Sun. While previous missions found many types of planets, PLATO focuses on finding a "second Earth"—rocky planets at the right distance from their star for liquid water to exist. By studying "starquakes" (asteroseismology), it will also determine the age of these systems, helping us understand how unique our own Solar System truly is.

Image: Discovery of three warm Jupiters: New gas giants TIC 147027702 b, TIC 245076932 b, and TIC 87422071 b
Astronomers have successfully characterized three new 'warm Jupiters'—gas giant planets similar in size to Jupiter but with much longer orbits than the typical 'hot Jupiters' found close to their stars. Using data from the TESS space telescope and the new PLATOSpec instrument, the team identified TIC 147027702 b, which orbits its star every 44 days; TIC 245076932 b, a planet with a notably oval-shaped, eccentric orbit and a 21-day period; and TIC 87422071 b, a more massive giant orbiting e...
