Ocean planets

Ocean planets, often called water worlds, contain vast amounts of water—far more than Earth, where oceans make up only a tiny fraction of the planet's total mass. Water can cover the entire surface tens of kilometers deep or hide beneath a thick icy crust, similar to Jupiter's moon Europa in our solar system. Whether water remains liquid depends on the distance from its star and atmospheric conditions. These worlds have a lower density than purely rocky planets. Under the extreme pressure of deep global oceans, exotic forms of high-pressure ice often freeze at the bottom, separating the water layer from the rocky core.

Image: Atmospheric composition of sub-Neptune planets around Red dwarf stars reveals new hybrid class
Sub-Neptune planets orbiting Red dwarf stars are typically categorized into two groups: gas dwarfs, which consist of a rocky core surrounded by a primary hydrogen and helium envelope, and water worlds, which are volatile-rich bodies that formed in the colder regions of their star systems. Distinguishing between these two types based solely on mass and radius is often difficult because their physical characteristics can overlap, making their observed properties appear identical even if their orig...

A new study searched for methanol in the planet-forming disk around HL Tauri but found none. The results suggest thick dust may hide methanol, making its detection difficult. This could mean HL Tau's chemistry is different from other young stars....
