Neutron stars

Neutron stars are extreme remnants of a supernova explosion, where the core of a massive star collapses into a sphere only about 20 kilometers in diameter. Imagine compressing the mass of two of our Suns into a space the size of a small city; the density is so incredible that a teaspoon of this matter would weigh billions of tons. While in our solar system the Sun rotates slowly, these stars can spin up to 700 times per second. They are the densest objects in the universe that are not yet black holes, representing a fascinating frontier of physics where matter behaves very differently than what we are used to at home.
  • Percentage of Neutron stars within 98.5 light years: 0 % (0 from 9520 stars)
  • Average mass of Neutron stars: 100-300% solar mass
  • Average radius of Neutron stars: 0.001-0.002% solar radius
  • Average temperature of Neutron stars: 600000-1000000 K

Scientists have used X-ray observations to create a detailed map of the Fe K emission in the low-mass X-ray binary system 4U 1822-371. This system consists of a compact object, likely a neutron star, and a companion star orbiting each other every 5.57 hours. The study used data from the XRISM satellite, covering eleven orbits of the system, to track how the X-ray emission changes with the orbital period. By analyzing the Doppler shifts in the Fe K line, the researchers produced the first velo...
