Lava planets

Lava planets are rocky worlds that orbit extremely close to their host star—far closer than Mercury is to the Sun. Their orbital periods last just a few hours or days. Due to intense stellar radiation, surface temperatures reach thousands of degrees Celsius, melting solid rock into oceans of molten magma. These planets are often tidally locked: one side faces the scorching star perpetually, while the far side remains in dark cold. The massive temperature contrast and intense tidal forces caused by the star’s gravity fracture the planet’s crust, driving extreme volcanism and evaporating rocks on the dayside.

Image: Thick carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide atmospheres possible on lava planet TOI-561 b
TOI-561 b is a rocky, ultrashort-period exoplanet that orbits its star extremely quickly, resulting in intense irradiation. Recent data suggests this world may possess a thick, secondary atmosphere hovering above a global, molten surface, or magma ocean. Unlike the primary atmospheres of giant planets, which are captured from gas clouds, a secondary atmosphere is generated by gases released from the planet's interior over time. Researchers used the PROTEUS framework, a computer model that lin...

Image: Volcanic activity and mantle dynamics shape the lava world K2-141 b
K2-141 b, a lava world, shows mantle convection and nightside volcanism. Volcanic eruptions release gases, but their heat is too faint to detect. Future studies may spot atmospheric signals from outgassing....
