Hot Jupiter

A Hot Jupiter is a giant gas planet similar to our Jupiter, but with one key difference: it orbits extremely close to its star. While our Jupiter takes 12 years to orbit the Sun, these exotics complete their "year" in just a few days. Due to the intense heat from the star, their atmosphere expands like a hot air balloon, making them sparse and "puffy" worlds. We find nothing like this in our solar system; in our neighborhood, only small rocky planets exist close to the Sun.

Image: Atmospheric composition of hot Jupiter KELT-2A b reveals chemical history
The hot Jupiter KELT-2A b features an atmosphere containing measurable amounts of water vapor. By observing the planet across five nights, investigators detected water with high certainty. This finding builds on previous research, providing a clearer picture of the chemical elements present in the gas giant's outer layers. While researchers searched for carbon monoxide, the current data remains inconclusive, though hints of its presence appeared near the expected planetary velocity. To determ...
