Habitable exoplanets

Habitable exoplanets orbit within a star’s habitable zone, where conditions allow liquid water to exist. The distance from the star dictates temperature—just like in our solar system, where Mercury is scorching, Mars is freezing, and Earth sits in the ideal sweet spot. Liquid water requires surface temperatures between roughly 0 and 100 °C under adequate atmospheric pressure. Chemical composition is equally vital. A planet needs a rocky surface and an atmosphere rich in elements like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, which serve as essential building blocks for life.

Image: Variable X-ray radiation likely drives helium escape from exoplanet LHS 1140 b
LHS 1140 b is a rocky planet orbiting within the habitable zone of a Red dwarf star. Previous observations detected helium escaping from the planet as it transited, or passed in front of, its host star. Because stars emit high-energy radiation that can strip away planetary atmospheres, researchers analyzed whether fluctuations in the star's X-ray and ultraviolet output could explain the changing levels of escaping helium. Using the XMM-Newton space telescope, observers monitored the system fo...

Image: Escaping helium atmosphere identified on the rocky exoplanet LHS 1140b
Spectroscopic observations reveal helium escaping from the atmosphere of rocky exoplanet LHS 1140b. Data from 2024 and 2025 show this process is time-variable, suggesting an atmosphere depleted of hydrogen. No such escape was detected on the companion planet LHS 1140c....
