CHEOPS

CHEOPS (CHaracterising ExOPlanets Satellite) is a joint mission between ESA and Switzerland focused on precisely measuring the size of known exoplanets. Imagine the Solar System where CHEOPS, from afar, watches planets move like small beads passing in front of a lamp, momentarily "imprinting" on its brightness. This small 32 cm telescope uses the transit method—measuring the tiny dip in a star's light as a planet passes in front. This allows us to determine the planet's radius with extreme precision. During its 3.5-year mission, it helps reveal if these distant worlds are dense and rocky like Earth or gaseous like Jupiter.

Image: Low density super earth TOI-2211 b characterized as a potential hot water world
The exoplanet TOI-2211 b is a super-Earth located on a close orbit around an orange dwarf star, completing one revolution every 3.09 days. Because it is positioned so close to its host star, it is subjected to intense radiation that often strips away light primordial atmospheres made of hydrogen and helium. The current analysis indicates that the mass and radius of the planet are not consistent with a simple bare rocky interior, nor with an atmosphere dominated by hydrogen. Instead, it is likely...

Image: CHEOPS observations reveal planetary densities and atmospheric evolution in V1298 Tau system
CHEOPS observations of the young V1298 Tau system provide refined measurements of its innermost planets. The findings reveal distinct bulk densities, suggesting diverse atmospheric evolution for these young worlds. No past dynamical excitation is required....
