Class of stars Red giant

The red giant is one of the final stages in the evolution of main sequence stars. These stars have already fused most of their hydrogen into helium, and their outer layers are gradually expanding. A white dwarf will form from the dense core of the original star, and the discarded upper layers will become a planetary nebula.

In 5 billion years the Sun will also enter the red giant phase. Its size will then inflate to the orbit of Earth or Mars.
