Large gas giant planets that orbit very close to their parent stars are known as hot Jupiters. By analyzing a sample of 268 stars, researchers have identified several hot Jupiters orbiting stars belonging to the high-alpha thick disk of our galaxy. The thick disk represents a component of the Milky Way containing older stars with specific chemical signatures, particularly higher amounts of alpha elements like magnesium, silicon, and calcium relative to iron. These systems are significantly older...

Image: Molecular emission in the disk around DM Tauri reveals complex chemical processes
Observations of the disk around DM Tauri reveal how N2H+ and DCO+ molecules are distributed. The data show that external UV radiation and cosmic rays influence the chemical makeup of the disk out to 400 astronomical units, impacting how planets may form....

Image: Narrow ring of gas found near the young star HD 152384
A narrow ring of gas has been characterized around the young star HD 152384. Located at the dust sublimation radius, the ring likely formed from the collisions of rocky planetesimals, offering a new look at early planetary system evolution....

Image: High resolution imaging reveals double-peaked dust structure in the TW Hydrae disk
New observations of the TW Hydrae protoplanetary disk reveal a dust structure at 52 astronomical units that features a double-peaked shape. The dust moves according to local orbital rules, and the lack of gas signatures suggests no massive planet is present....
