Les exoplanètes sont des mondes en orbite autour d'autres étoiles, tout comme la Terre orbite autour du Soleil. Alors que notre système solaire compte huit planètes liées à une étoile centrale, les exoplanètes étendent ce concept à l'univers entier. Il peut s'agir de géantes gazeuses comme Jupiter ou de mondes rocheux semblables à la Terre. Les astronomes en ont découvert des milliers, et chaque étoile dans le ciel nocturne pourrait être un "Soleil" potentiel pour ses propres satellites. Ces corps nous aident à comprendre si notre agencement planétaire est commun ou unique.
